Bedivere

Sir Bedivere was the butler, and later one of the Knights of the Round Table, of King Arthur.

He and the king were the only survivors of the battle of Lyonness. The king, mortally wounded, told Bedivere to throw Excalibur into Dozmary Pool. Although he was very reluctant and twice declined to do so, Bedivere finally obeyed, and saw it caught by the hand of the Lady of the Lake. Bedivere then helped the dying king to his funeral barge, and watched until it disappeared from sight.
