Wikileaks
From Encyc
Wikileaks is a website that publishes documents leaked from government and corporate sources. It also has some commentary. Although it runs on MediaWiki software, all submissions are screened before they are posted to the site by the administrators.
In 2010, it leaked thousands of documents relating to the war in Afghanistan.
Jimmy Wales, leader of Wikipedia and Wikia, claims no relation to Wikileaks (found at wikileaks.org). However there are several coincidences:
- Wikia owns the domain names for wikileaks.com, wikileaks.net, and wikileaks.us, and the sites show content from wikileaks.org. This means that visitors wishing to find leaked documents can obtain them at www.wikileaks.com, a Wikia-owned website.
- Wikileaks.org is privately registered through a company that is located two blocks away from the former office of Wikia
- John Young, an estranged co-founder of Wikileaks, claims that the current operators are attempting to "monetize this kind of thing". Wikia specializes in monetizing free content.
