Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia was a country southeastern Europe, in an area known as the Balkans. It was ruled by the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) for a long time before parts of it emerged independent in the 19th century. Some regions became part of Austria-Hungary. Following World War I the country was unified as a homeland for the southern Slavs. Following World War II, it went communist under Tito, but remained somewhat independent from the Soviet Union. In the 1990's the country fell apart, with Serbia fighting several unsuccessful wars against breakaway provinces.
