Ulysses S GrantUlysses S. Grant was a general in the Civil War, and later the eighteenth President of the United States of America. Before the war he was a failed businessman and alcoholic. As a general for the Union, he rose to prominence commanding the Vicksburg Campaign?, eventually overcoming the Confederate defenses with masterful siege tactics. This victory split the Confederacy in two, and gave the Union uninterrupted control of the Mississippi River. Following that he took control of the Army of the Potomac, in the East, and led it on a string of battles culminating in the Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse?. Following the war he was elected as President twice, but his presidencies were marred by corruption scandals. |
