Polio

Polio is a disease? that damages the nervous system?, paralyzing many of its victims. It is caused by a virus?. Franklin Roosevelt was infected by it as an adult, and lived the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

In the 1950's two vaccines against polio were developed. The Sabin vaccine is oral and uses a live attenuated virus. The Salk vaccine is injectable and uses killed virus. The Sabin is slightly more effective, but less safe because it can revert to a virulent strain and cause polio.
