Chemical Element

A chemical element is defined by its atomic number. Hydrogen, carbon and oxygen? are some common elements, having atomic numbers 1, 6 and 8 respectively. New elements are sometimes discovered via nuclear reactions, but at the time of writing we are aware of the existence of 117 elements (although elements that are only obtainable via nuclear reactions tend to decay very quickly). All chemical matter is composed of these elements, usually as molecules? that are made of several elements that are bonded? together.
