Attack On Pearl Harbor Burning ships in Pearl Harbor The attack on Pearl Harbor was the first battle fought between the United States and Japan in World War II. It was a sneak attack, where the Japanese sent an aircraft carrier fleet to bomb the naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. At the time the fleet left Japan, the Japanese were still pretending to be interested in peace, and were negotiating. The planes caught the Americans unprepared on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. Roosevelt described it as " a date which will live in infamy". All of the American battleships in the Pacific fleet were sunk or heavily damaged. Shortly following the battle the Japanese invaded Wake Island and the Philippines. |
